The Secret Suburbia Interview (16/05/07)
Interviewing great sounding bands is becoming Banxy's forte. This time, he's been speaking to an alternative/electronic rock group from Ontario, Canada. They are Secret Suburbia and this is their interview.

Alternative/Electronic Rock does not come much smoother than the music produced by Secret Suburbia, a band no stranger to Hollywood, or having songs featuring on hit TV shows the world over. With tunes featuring on shows such as "24" and "Mutant-X" this band can only have a very bright future ahead of them, I got the chance to interview them here:

Banxy :
How did you come up with the band's name?

Secret Suburbia :
The band's frontman, TJ, came up with the band's name - Secret Suburbia is all about what goes on behind the scenes. People tend to have a preset idea of what goes on in the suburbs, with tree lined streets, white picket fences and two-car garages, and this simple 'wholesome' lifestyle. Of course, things are never what they seem, and there's much more to life in the suburbs. Everyone has their secrets. Of course, once the band gains popularity, the secret will be out, and the plan is to just be known as 'Suburbia'.

Banxy :
How would you describe your music?

Secret Suburbia :
Our music is the bastard child of punk, rock, electronica, hip-hop and rhythmic singing.

Banxy : What/Who has influenced the band's music style?

Secret Suburbia : Smashing Pumpkins, Zepellin, CrystalMethod (not the drug), Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails.

Banxy : The band has licensed music for the TV series "24" and other programs, such as MTV's The Real World, Road Rules and MutantX - are any of the band fans of any of these series? If so, how did they/you react when your music was licensed for it?

Secret Suburbia : It's always a thrill when our music is placed in television and such. One of our tracks was placed in episode one of the first season of 24 so no one knew how big it would become. Mark, the band's bass guitarist, was down in Florida and happened to be watching (not knowing the song had been placed). He heard music that seemed familiar to him for some reason, and obviously flipped out when he realized that it was the band's tune.

Banxy : A lot of huge bands have said that the success they have achieved doesn't really register with them, do you think there is an event that would make you think to yourself You know what? we're huge!?

Secret Suburbia : When John Bonham comes back from the grave to watch one of our shows.

Banxy : Does the band have any mascots?

Secret Suburbia : Yoshi and Tofu (see picture). Hug your pug!

Banxy : Who would you most like to work with and why?

Secret Suburbia : Maynard James Keenanof Tool - great voice.

Banxy : Who is the band's favourite Superhero?

Secret Suburbia : We have to go with Officer T.J. McCabe from the 1970s television series S.W.A.T. - only because that's how T.J. got his name (his Mom was a fan).

Banxy : Have you ever uncovered any secrets in any suburbia? If so, what were they?

Secret Suburbia : We'd tell you... but we'd have to kill you.

Banxy : Do you have any upcoming Tours/Albums etc you would like to tell us about?

Secret Suburbia : Secret Suburbia's latest CD, MidiGritty, will be released at the end of June, 2007. The band isalso competing in Bodog's million dollar battle of the bands - so go online, register and vote for us!!! (www.bodogbattle.ca/vote) In addition to gigs around the Toronto area, the band has been invited to play a tour of Sweden, the last two weeks of July. Check out our myspace page for details!

Banxy : Thanks guys!
