The Lush Puppies Interview (28/05/07)
Electro has been the defining sound of the last couple of years, with the return (and evolution) of the classic 80's sound. With that in mind, KJS has recently interviewed a new pair of producers who define the genre with their great sounding electro house - The Lush Puppies.
Browsing around casually, I stumbled upon a DJ/Producer combo whose tracks simply blew me away. The Lush Puppies' crisp, funky electric sound had me tapping my feet and bobbing my head to their infectious beats. As they seemed quite anonymous and mysterious, I had to find out more. This is The Lush Puppies Interview:-

KJS :
So, tell us a little about the people behind "The Lush Puppies"...

Simon : Simon and Mike are the two ingredients to Lush Puppies, having met up in Corfu four years ago. We have always stayed in touch, but it was only about a year ago that we started working together in the studio. Mike comes from a background of extensive DJing throughout the UK and abroad and Simon has had residences in the Greek islands for the last six years. Underneath all this, we both have a great love for house music and, with our personalities complimenting each other, it just seemed right to work together.

KJS : How did you get into electro and house music?

Simon : We've always had a love for house music in general and Mike was buying electro in the 80's with his pocket money and has a massive collection at his home. So with the electro house sound, it just feels like we are making music that we can really get our hearts and souls into.

KJS : Who are your biggest musical influences?

Simon : We would like to give credit where credit is due. We would have to say people like Chris Lake, Mark knight and lately Micky Slim have been producing some great stuff!!

KJS : Who/What do you listen to when you aren't playing your own stuff?

Simon : I listen to all types of house music if I'm in the car and it's a nice day you can't beat a bit of vocal funky house. Although when I'm at home and my girlfriend is in charge of the stereo I have to listen to a very wide range of different types of music which can sometimes be helpful for ideas to put into our tracks.

Mike : I tend to listen to a lot of chillout house or vocal house when I’m relaxing, and also love listening to old speed garage.

KJS : Who would you most like to work with and why?

Simon : It’s got to be Pete Tong! Just because he's a living legend in the UK house scene and has been around for as long as we can remember.

KJS : Where would you most like to perform a set?

Simon : Definetly at Fatboyslim's beach party in Brighton! But seeing as that's been and gone, Eden in Ibiza would be nice! To be honest we both love travelling and playing abroad, just love the vibe that gives off.

KJS : Have you ever had any embarrassing moments whilst performing a set?

Simon : Of course! We have both done the classic - had too much to drink and, when the club's having it, taken the wrong needle off the deck, YES! Embarrassing, but hey.

KJS : What would define "making it big" for you?

Simon : A show on Radio1, with a track at number one and headlining at somewhere like Eden in Ibiza.

KJS : A lot of house music and electro artists have chosen to go mainstream with their bigger tracks in recent years - Mylo, Roger Sanchez, Solu Music and Martin Solveig to name a few - is this something you would ever consider, or would you prefer to stay strictly on the electro/house scene?

Simon : Of course, because this can only be good for your profile and would help make you a household name. I think that's something every DJ and producer wants, if they tell you otherwise then they're lying!

KJS : What is your favourite track:-
a) Of all time?
b) Of your own tracks?

Simon : That's a hard one. Of all time? I can't pick one because there's so many. Sorry!

Mike : A track called “Reckless” by Ice T.

Simon : Of our own, this is a bit easier - I have two. The first is "Roar (Vocal Mix)". The second... "Whoa", it’s not finished yet but both Mike and I are feeling the energy!

KJS : Are there any plans for a Lush Puppies website?

Simon : There are plans and we will have one soon, but seeing as we've had such a great response through MySpace I can't say it's been top of our list at the moment.

KJS : Do you have any upcoming gigs/releases or anything like that which you would like to tell us about?

Simon : Sure! We have an E.P out on 18th June 2007 called "Roar E.P". This features all the tracks on our MySpace page. We've had a lot of people asking when they're released, so hopefully it should do well. Also we have a monthly residency with funking marvellous, details of that and other events are on our page.
